Hard Search

A full credit check that leaves a visible footprint on your credit file which other lenders can see when assessing your applications. Multiple hard searches in a short period can lower your credit score and signal financial distress to lenders. Hard searches are typically performed when you submit a full loan application and agree to a credit check.

Example

Applying to five different lenders in one week leaves five hard search footprints on your credit file, which can make subsequent lenders more cautious.
