Guarantor Loans UK (2026)

Considering a guarantor loan? Understand how they work, who can be a guarantor, and compare alternatives from our reviewed panel.

Top lenders reviewed Always free No obligation

A guarantor loan requires a second person — usually a family member or close friend — to agree to cover your repayments if you cannot. The guarantor takes on real financial risk: if you miss payments, the lender will pursue them for the money. This is a serious commitment for both parties.

Guarantor loans were once common in the UK for borrowers with poor credit. The market has shifted significantly — most guarantor lenders have left the market, and direct-to-consumer lenders that assess affordability without a guarantor have taken their place. All eight lenders on our panel offer no-guarantor loans.

If you are considering asking someone to guarantee your loan, think carefully. Will it strain the relationship? Can they genuinely afford to cover repayments if needed? In most cases, a no-guarantor bad credit loan is a better option — it keeps the risk with you and does not put a loved one's finances at risk. All lenders on our panel are FCA-regulated.
