I've Been Refused Credit — What Can I Do? (2026)
Been knocked back for a loan? Do not panic — here is exactly what happened, what it means, and what to do next.
Being refused credit feels personal — but it is not. Lenders use automated scoring systems that assess risk in seconds. A refusal means you did not meet that specific lender's criteria at that specific time. It does not mean no one will lend to you. Different lenders have different thresholds.
A credit refusal does appear on your credit file — but only as a "hard search" (also called a "credit application footprint"). It shows that you applied and were declined. Multiple hard searches in a short period can further reduce your score, which is why applying to multiple lenders in quick succession is counterproductive. Space applications at least 30 days apart.
Why you were refused matters. Common reasons: too many recent applications, thin credit file (no history), CCJs or defaults, affordability concerns (income too low for the amount requested), or errors on your credit file. Check your credit file for free at Experian, TransUnion, or Equifax. Errors are more common than you think — wrong addresses, closed accounts showing as open, or someone else's debt linked to your file.
What to do next: check your credit file for errors and correct them. Wait 30 days before applying elsewhere. Apply for a smaller amount. Consider a credit builder product (Creditspring) to build your file. If you have been turned down everywhere, free debt advice from StepChange can help you understand your options without judgment.
